Originally founded in the 3rd century B.C. and located along the busy shipping lanes of the eastern Mediterranean, Famagusta was once a bustling port for merchants from Europe and the Near East, as well as for the armies of the Christian crusaders and Ottoman Turks. Its prominence soared following the fall of Acre in 1291 A.D., when the small harbor town became a major regional commercial port, eventually rivaling Constantinople and Venice. Famagusta was ruled by a succession of western European conquerors over the last millennium and gained notoriety as the coronation site of the kings of Jerusalem during the Crusader period.
